Do you believe that safe pedestrian and bike access between Wallingford and the U District is a priority?
In September, the U District light rail station will open to provide a convenient and efficient alternative to commuting by car between Northgate and the airport, and all points between. As a result, getting to and from the station will be critical to the success of such a large infrastructure investment.
Please ask our City Council to add $400,000 of the General Fund for the critical bicycle and pedestrian improvements along NE 45th Street to safely cross Interstate 5 (Item 131 of Council Bill CBA SDOT-013-A-001).
Why is this a priority?
Safety - These improvements would address two of the ten most dangerous intersections in the city (Seattle Times), where 25 pedestrians and cyclists have been injured in the past decade. The risk of accidents will only increase with the opening of the station and recent upzones. Alternative crossings are too distant on foot or bike.
Connection - This crossing along NE 45th Street connects more than the pending station, but includes dense urban housing, major institutions like the University of Washington, and the largest transit hub outside of downtown. This challenging connection is already essential to both neighborhoods for commuting to work, school, and errands. If made safer, family and recreational users may join.
Wide Support - The Washington State and Seattle departments of transportation, Sound Transit, and both Wallingford and U District communities are aligned on the need for improvements. In fact, the Levy to Move Seattle mandates these happen before light rail opens. Councilmember Pedersen strongly supports the plan and has endorsed the modest budget request.
No Impacts - The city (SDOT) studied the proposal and found no adverse impacts: no loss of parking, no traffic delays, no reduction to flows onto and off the bridge, and it would not involve structural work on the bridge itself.

The pandemic has forced many tough choices for our city to stretch the current budget as equitably as possible. The safety of pedestrians and bicyclists remains a top priority, especially once we return to normal lives. Please support this proposal.
Thank you.
