Nicollet Mall Farmers Market
Minneapolis, MN
Overview: The first transit mall in the US, Nicollet is a two-lane transit and pedestrian mall. The road is 2 lanes and open to transit and taxis only. The current mix of retail and institutions is very similar to the current mix on 5th Ave and includes Brooks Brothers, Target, Dakota Jazz Club, Macy’s and the Public Library. Nicollet Ave is often referred to as “Eat Street” because it is home to over 65 restaurants and eateries – many of which have outdoor seating during the summer. Serving a Downtown where 130,000 people work
After opening in 1965 the mall is currently going through a $50 M construction project to make it greener and more enjoyable for pedestrians add more activation elements (something that we could push for in the 20-year goal).
Economic Data: Total retail, food and drink sales along Nicollet Mall = $178.5 Million with 158,000 jobs in downtown Minneapolis. This works out to $1.1 Million in sales per every thousand jobs, slightly lower than Seattle’s $1.3 Million in sales per every thousand jobs. The mall is currently in the middle of a 2- year, $50 million revitalization construction project. Construction is expected to end in late 2017
